All auctions / Medals, Arms & Armor / (6) Presidential Appointment Documents

Group of six presidential appointment documents spanning the administrations of Millard Fillmore through Franklin D. Roosevelt, with secretarial, stamped or printed presidential signatures. The group includes two General Land Office appointments from the Fillmore and Pierce administrations, reflecting the federal agency responsible for surveying, managing and transferring the rapidly expanding public lands of the United States. Three particularly impressive large-format Andrew Johnson commissions are military appointments issued during the immediate post-Civil War period, including appointments to the ranks of First Lieutenant and Brevet Major. These ornate documents feature elaborate patriotic engravings of American flags, cannon and military equipment and retain applied seals. Also included is a 1934 Franklin D. Roosevelt appointment naming James Lee as Postmaster at Willimantic, Connecticut. An interesting group of official presidential commissions documenting federal land administration, military service during the Reconstruction era, and a Depression-era federal appointment. Presidential signatures are secretarial, stamped or printed and are not represented as personally signed. Expected folds, toning, staining, edge wear and occasional losses. Estimate $600 - $1,000
