These are five damask linen napkins featuring the initials “J.P..” Originally part of a complete set of twelve, only five remain. The other seven were lost over time due to heavy wear and tear—a common occurrence in the early 20th century. In many French households, napkins were not rotated evenly; instead, the same few were used repeatedly whenever the table was set, while the rest remained stored away in the wedding armoire. The “J.P..” initials are hand-embroidered, making each one subtly unique. Although the embroiderers followed a consistent design, slight variations in interpretation give each napkin its own character. They are hand hemmed. The damask background features the simple “damien” pattern, reminiscent of a chessboard, adding a classic and understated elegance to the linen.
