Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Guanacaste-Nicoya region. A quartet of buff and russet earthenware bowls, each raised on three hollow supports slit lengthwise to release the clay pellets sealed inside, so that lifting or shaking the vessel produces a soft rattle. The rounded bodies rise to everted rims, girdled below the shoulder by applique fillets, incised herringbone bands, and small modeled adornos, some suggesting stylized animal heads or lugs. Surfaces retain traces of burnishing and a warm fire-clouded slip. Tripod rattle vessels of this kind served in food preparation and presentation, and their acoustic legs likely carried ceremonial weight in feasting or mortuary display. Their variety of scale and decoration within a single form makes the group instructive: one potting tradition, four solutions to the same problem of sound, stance, and surface. Rattle supports are a hallmark of Central American ceramic engineering. The potter shaped each leg as a hollow chamber, dropped in fired clay pellets before closing it, then cut a narrow vertical slot so the sound could escape and the trapped air vent during firing (an unvented hollow leg tends to burst in the kiln). The result is a vessel that announces its own movement, an effect exploited across Greater Nicoya and lower Central America from roughly the Middle Polychrome period onward. Comparable slotted-leg tripods occur in Guanacaste and on the Nicoya Peninsula, often in domestic refuse as well as burials, indicating that these were working vessels whose sonic quality was an accepted part of daily and ritual life rather than a purely funerary conceit. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. Item # 204261
