3pc Wedgwood Outlines of Grandeur Plates Designed by Laurence Whistler

This set of three fine earthenware plates is from the Outlines of Grandeur series, manufactured by Wedgwood of Barlaston and designed by the British artist and glass engraver Laurence Whistler. The group features monochrome transfer-printed illustrations of notable British landmarks in a stylized graphic manner. Included in this lot are depictions of Stonehenge under a celestial sky with stars and a crescent moon, the Clifton Suspension Bridge with light rays breaking through clouds, and the ruins of Tintern Abbey. Each central scene is identified by a decorative cartouche at the bottom. The rims are decorated with a continuous interlocking scroll pattern in an ocher-toned transfer. The reverse of each plate displays a printed mark in ocher stating the series name, the designer, and the manufacturer. Two plates also carry a silver-tone circular sticker for the Rubin Collection.
