Clos Cristal is a prestigious red wine estate located in the Saumur-Champigny appellation in the Loire Valley, France. It was founded in 1890 by Antoine Cristal, a visionary man who wanted to produce exceptional red wines in a region mainly known for white wines. What makes Clos Cristal unique is its innovative vineyard design. The vines grow through holes in stone walls, with their roots kept in the shade on the north side and their grapes exposed to the sun on the south side. This technique creates a balance between freshness and sunlight, allowing the grapes to ripen earlier and develop complex aromas. Clos Cristal wines became famous around the world, from European royal courts to Japan and Russia, as well as the finest restaurants in France. It is said that King Edward VII of England was particularly fond of them.
