2005 Porsche Paul Stephens Lightweight PS 300 R Prototype. Prototype and first customer-sold car from England’s leading restomod specialist. Three legendary RS models combined in one car: the 1973 Carrera RS, 964 RS and 993 RS. Eligible for registration on classic vehicle tax in 2027. Before the restomod movement really took off, British Porsche specialist Paul Stephens had a vision: to bring together the best of three of the most iconic 911 models in a single car. The recipe was simple but ambitious - the distinctive “ducktail” from the 1973 Carrera RS, the weight and brakes of the 964 RS, and the 3.8-litre flat-six from the 993 RS. The result was the PS 300R - a Porsche developed using elements from several of the marque’s classic models. The philosophy was not to go retro or recreate the aesthetics of the early 911s, as is seen in many restomod projects today. Instead, Stephens wanted to retain the focus on low weight and driving dynamics, rather than follow the new generation of 911s, which were becoming increasingly luxurious, comfortable and technologically advanced, resulting in larger proportions and greater weight. The PS 300R is therefore far less polished than many of today’s restomods, with their leather-trimmed engine bays and hand-stitched carpets. Instead, the focus is on craftsmanship and on making the car as sharp, direct and rewarding to drive as possible. The starting point was a Porsche 964 Carrera 2, which was stripped down and rebuilt using lightweight components in the cabin and carefully selected mechanical parts. Once completed, the car was extensively tested and subsequently fine-tuned until the balance and performance were considered perfect. The project began in 2002, and by 2005 Paul Stephens was ready to present three prototypes to the motoring press at Brands Hatch. It is one of these three historic predecessors to the PS models that is offered here. A so-called PS 300R, the name being a play on RS and Paul Stephens’ initials. The number 300 indicates the car’s 300 horsepower, while the R may well refer to racing. The car carries production number 002, suggesting that it was also the first PS 300R sold to a customer. It was featured in several motoring magazines at the time of its launch, with this particular example both road-tested and photographed for the occasion. Now, 21 years later, the car remains in original and well-preserved condition. The blue paintwork presents beautifully, while the distinctive orange Fuchs wheels remain a striking visual feature. The cabin reflects a car that has been treated with respect for its history over the years, while also being driven and enjoyed. The engine bay is clean and well maintained, and when the key is turned, the flat-six fires into life with a distinctive sound befitting a car focused on driving dynamics rather than comfort. Here is an alternative to finding an old Porsche and converting it yourself, as well as an alternative to the highly polished restomods where the focus is often placed on finish and detail rather than driving. The PS 300R is a visually coherent and historically interesting Porsche, expertly built with an emphasis on driving dynamics and drawing on three legendary RS models.
