This sculpture represents Saint Louis IX, King of France (1214-1270), one of the most venerated figures of European Christian monarchy and a model of a pious and just sovereign. Canonized in 1297 by Pope Boniface VIII, Saint Louis was widely depicted in French sculpture and painting as a symbol of virtue, rectitude, and defense of the faith. The work shows him in royal attire and bearing the attributes of his royal dignity, following an iconography established since the Middle Ages and widely disseminated in subsequent centuries. Executed in gilded and polychrome terracotta, the sculpture is notable for the delicacy of its modeling, the serene expressiveness of its face, and the careful treatment of its ornamental details, which contribute to enhancing its devotional and decorative character.
