Near East, Ottoman Empire. A pair of Ottoman cast and engraved brass firearm accessory boxes, of a type variously identified as grease containers, percussion cap holders, or cartridge cases. The first is of rounded shield form with a flat upper edge, and its surfaces are engraved with foliate scrollwork, with lateral loops at either side and a further loop below for suspension from a belt. The second is rectangular with an articulated hinged lid and two thick loops on the verso for belt suspension. Its face is cast with a raised central boss within a beaded roundel, framed by crosshatched panels above a row of projecting loops along the lower edge for the attachment of tassels and charms. Personal firearms accoutrements were among the most visible markers of status across the Ottoman provinces. A rider or irregular soldier wore his priming flask, cartridge case, and flint pouch openly on a chest bandolier, where their engraved faces were as much display as equipment. Item # 204563
