South Asia, India, Assam, Bodo tribe. A sarinda, the bowed fiddle of northeastern India, carved from wood with iron panels nailed to the sides. The lower body forms a waisted, double-lobed resonator with an open belly once covered by a stretched hide membrane and a bridge. Above the thick neck sits a rectangular pegbox pierced for lateral pegs, one of which survives, topped by a stylized animal head typical of Bodo work. Played upright against the body, such fiddles accompanied song and ritual among the Bodo of the Brahmaputra valley. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. Item # 202916
