All auctions / Medals, Arms & Armor / 19th C. American Steel Crescent Blade Axe with Wood Haft

North America, United States. A hand-forged axe with a wide, crescent-shaped blade that sweeps out from a long, narrow neck. The head is fixed to its haft by a rounded socket eye, and a small lug projects from the back of the neck where it meets the socket. The blade still shows broad hammer work, with a softly ridged area where the neck spreads into the cutting edge and a mottled gray surface from long handling. The straight wooden haft tapers slightly and has a warm honey color with clearly visible grain. It ends in a conical iron cap that protects the butt and adds weight at the grip end. The piece looks hand-made rather than factory-made, and its balanced proportions suit display as well as study of early edged tools. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
