After advancing from the group stage, they eliminated Morocco in the round of 16, Mexico on penalties in the quarterfinals, and France in the semifinals, qualifying for the final against Argentina. The team featured an exceptional generation of footballers. Lothar Matthäus, present at #302, would become one of the most important midfielders in the history of German football and captain of the world champion Germany four years later at Italia 1990. Andreas Brehme, present at #300, was another fundamental protagonist of the German national team and would later become famous for the decisive penalty in the 1990 World Cup final. Also in the lot we find Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, twice Ballon d’Or and captain of West Germany at Mexico 86, along with Rudi Völler, Pierre Littbarski, Felix Magath, Klaus Allofs and Harald Schumacher. It was Schumacher who starred in the quarterfinal against Mexico, when West Germany won on penalties 4-1; in that sequence the German scorers were Allofs, Brehme, Matthäus and Littbarski.
