1986 – BMW R80 G/S Paris–Dakar, Chassis No. 628 918 6 R806/6 Engine

Swiss vehicle registration certificate; roadworthiness test up to date Swiss type-approval, type: 607230, only 78 units* with a short-ratio gearbox, factory-marked ‘CH’, out of the 3,206 R 80 G/S Paris-Dakar models produced between 1984 and 1987. BOGE shock absorber with separate gas cylinder, an Enduro option fitted to BMW rally motorbikes. When BMW unveiled the R 80 G/S in 1980, the Bavarian brand did not merely create a new motorbike; it pioneered the Adventure Sport segment. Shaped and immortalised by the victories of Hubert Auriol (1981, 1983) and Gaston Rahier (1984, 1985) on the tracks of the Paris-Dakar rally, the factory-built ‘Paris-Dakar’ variant transcended competition to become an instant commercial and cultural icon. The example we have the privilege of presenting was produced on 9 July 1986 at the Berlin-Spandau factory, delivered to the garage in Switzerland on 8 September 1986 and sold on 11 September 1986 to its first owner. These dates are of paramount importance to connoisseurs of the brand, as they mark the final months of the original series featuring the Monolever single-sided swingarm, prior to the launch of the heavier R 80 GS Paralever in late 1987. It embodies the very essence of the manufacturer’s original engineering philosophy. Lightweight, more streamlined and featuring a direct drive train of legendary reliability, the 1986 Monolever version is regarded by connoisseurs as the purest, most incisive and most desirable variant ever built. During the 1980s, the Swiss Confederation imposed the most stringent noise and environmental standards in Europe. To comply with these strict specifications, BMW Motorrad fitted its vehicles exported to Switzerland with specialised equipment. The Bavarian engineers developed exclusive mechanical specifications, stamped at the factory. The type-approval certificate (Typenschein CH 607230) details the modifications made to obtain authorisation for distribution within Switzerland. BMW Motorrad did not simply restrict the exhaust. Gearbox stamped with the original ‘CH’ mark. A specific transmission casing incorporating a reworked gear ratio and gear set. This perfect combination with the short final drive ratio of 37/11 allows for shorter gear ratios, delivering remarkably lively acceleration at mid-range revs – ideal for Alpine passes and technical terrain. It also ensures the bike passes noise level tests without any issues. Optimised 32 mm Bing carburettor. Specific set-up with a modified air box and jets. A factory option: the BOGE shock absorber with a separate gas cylinder. Among the most sought-after options in the 1986 catalogue is this rear shock absorber with an off-set gas cylinder. Unlike the standard components, which are prone to overheating, this nitrogen-charged system guarantees enduring and flawless damping. Maintained in perfect working order, this extremely rare piece of equipment reinforces the authenticity of this motorbike. Like the most prestigious vehicles, whose value is determined by the clarity of their history, this R 80 G/S Paris-Dakar boasts complete documentary traceability, with very few equivalents on the market. The original 1986 purchase invoice: Issued by the official Swiss BMW Dealer network, detailing the options and the original purchaser. The Swiss type-approval document: Form CH 607230, indicating the short-ratio gearbox, stamped ‘CH’ and single-seater type-approval. The BMW Group Classic certificate: Official authentication from the parent company in Munich confirming matching numbers (chassis and engine) and the factory-fitted Paris-Dakar specification. The Swiss technical inspection report: Technical Inspection / MFK, April 2025, no observations or comments. Archives from the 1987 expedition. THE SWISS MECHANICAL EXCEPTION, TYPE APPROVAL CERTIFICATE CH 607230 During the 1980s, the Swiss Confederation imposed the most stringent noise and environmental standards in Europe. Among the most sought-after options in the 1986 catalogue is this rear shock absorber with an off-set reservoir. Unlike the standard components, which are prone to overheating, this nitrogen-charged system guarantees consistent and flawless damping performance. Preserved in perfect working order, this extremely rare piece of equipment reinforces the authenticity of this motorbike. THE 1987 AUSTRALIAN EPIC. A SOUL AND A HISTORY. Whilst some classic motorbikes are merely display pieces, this particular example possesses a fascinating dimension that will immediately captivate the discerning enthusiast. Just a few months after it was delivered brand new to Switzerland in September 1986, its first owner decided to fulfil the machine’s original purpose: to cross continents. During 1987, the motorbike was crated and shipped by freight to Perth for a transcontinental expedition across the Australian Outback. The machine covered thousands of kilometres of tracks and red earth. The file preserves a vivid record of this journey, with a map and archived GPS data: Verified coordinates of the waypoint: -17.703531, 133.629123 (junction of the Stuart Highway and the Tablelands Highway, Northern Territory, Australia). The original colour photograph from 1987 reproduced below shows the vehicle fully loaded with expedition saddlebags and period field equipment, providing irrefutable evidence of its Australian road trip This lot must be collected after the sale in Switzerland.
