1973 Citroën SM 3L No reserve

1973 Citroën SM 3L No reserve - Rare presence in Europe of a US 3L version with manual gearbox - Nice condition, superb 100% original interior - Accompanied by a substantial history file - Features all American-market specificities, except for the anti-pollution system - No reserve For a Citroën SM enthusiast like Thierry Dehaeck, a collection dedicated to the model's rarest variants could not overlook the American version. Indeed, the United States was the third market for the SM, receiving a model adapted to the numerous local regulatory requirements. In 1972, the SM was awarded "Car of the Year." The US versions are notably distinguished by the removal of the glass headlight covers, the addition of side markers, an emission control system, hazard lights, and specific controls. Furthermore, American customers preferred the Borg-Warner automatic transmission. Sales ceased at the end of 1973, as Citroën chose not to incur the costs required to meet the new 1974 US standards. Production thus totaled just 2,037 units for the United States, 396 for Canada, and 134 for Japan. The example presented here stands out for its particularly rare configuration, pairing the fuel-injected 3-liter engine with a manual gearbox. It is believed to be one of approximately 600 US-market SMs produced with this mechanical combination; the vast majority of buyers having opted for the automatic transmission. This SM had two owners in the United States before being exported to Sweden in 1989, where it belonged to a Mr Petterson. It was subsequently acquired on 4 July 2019 by Thierry Dehaeck, joining a collection that gathers several of the SM's rarest derivatives. Finished in a beautiful metallic blue, it boasts a highly attractive appearance while retaining its remarkably well-preserved original interior. Its anti-pollution system has been removed. It comes with a very interesting file of documents including its warranty and service book, US titles, maintenance invoices from its first two owners, a list of US Citroën dealers, and its FIVA identity card. Rarely seen in Europe, this American SM—in its rare 3-liter configuration with fuel injection and a manual transmission—presents a particularly attractive opportunity for collectors seeking the most unique versions of the legendary Citroën coupe.
