1972 Alfa Romeo Montreal by Bertone Legendary Tipo 33-derived V8 Alfa Romeo with Marcello Gandini design. Restored to an exceptional standard by Danish specialists. It is rare for an Italian car manufacturer to name one of its models after a Canadian city. The explanation for this exception can be found at Expo 67, where Alfa Romeo was invited to exhibit a concept car under the theme “Man’s Aspiration for the Automobile”. In other words, a dream car intended to compete for attention with the many remarkable creations on display from around the world. Alfa Romeo commissioned the design house Bertone, with Marcello Gandini responsible for the styling. Gandini would go on to design, among others, the Lamborghini Miura and Countach, the Lancia Stratos and numerous other iconic sports cars. His signature can clearly be seen in the Montreal’s design, which incorporates a number of characteristic details. In comparison, the Montral remains relatively accessible in terms of price. The exhibition car generated such interest that Alfa Romeo decided to put it into production. When the Montreal reached the market in 1971, however, it was far from an inexpensive car. It was powered by a modified version of the aluminium V8 from the Alfa Romeo Tipo 33, featuring dry-sump lubrication. The engine incorporated a number of technical solutions also found in contemporary sports and racing cars. The design, meanwhile, was only altered slightly, particularly considering that its starting point was a prototype originally conceived as an exhibition car rather than for production. There was, in fact, relatively little that needed changing. From its distinctive shark-like front and characteristic air intakes in the C-pillars to its truncated rear, the Montreal is defined by a series of carefully considered details. The four headlights with their beautiful covers, the distinctive window line and the Alfa Romeo badge seemingly recessed into the rear bodywork are among the details that define the design. The same attention to detail continues inside, where two large instruments, a high centre console and a short gear lever create a distinctly sporting environment suited to long drives. The auction’s Alfa Romeo Montreal was brought to Denmark from Sicily, where it was owned by a former technical director at Alfa Romeo. He restored the car and, drawing on his specialist knowledge, introduced a number of improvements, including a new fuel injection system in place of the original setup with four Weber carburettors, resulting in significantly improved sound and performance. The car was subsequently restored by skilled specialists in Denmark, bringing it back to its original and highly attractive specification, finished in Grigio Medio Metallizzato with a Rosso Lampone red leather interior. It is a car that reflects considerable knowledge, passion and respect for its historical origins. For those seeking not merely a Montreal, but an example with particularly impressive driving characteristics, this presents a compelling opportunity.
