French registration certificate; roadworthiness test up to date In 1956, Rumi updated his famous Formichino, which literally means ‘little ant’ in Italian. Launched in 1954 to compete with the Vespa and Lambretta, this scooter immediately stood out for its original design and superb cast aluminium bodywork. Designed with an almost artistic approach by Donnino Rumi, it is now regarded as one of the most distinctive Italian scooters of the 1950s. It was fitted with a 125 cm³ air-cooled, horizontal twin-cylinder two-stroke engine, producing around 6.5 ch and mated to a 4-speed gearbox. Its aluminium monocoque structure, which was particularly light and rigid, contributed to its unique character. In 1956, the Formichino was notably given a redesigned two-part rear bodywork and a storage compartment beneath the seat. This 1956 example is in a particularly endearing condition. Its current owner has taken great care to preserve this rare machine, ensuring it retains all its original authenticity and charm. With its twin-cylinder engine, aluminium construction and a history closely linked to racing – the Formichino having won the Bol d’Or on several occasions – this Rumi 125 is now a highly sought-after collector’s item.
