All auctions / Arts & Graphics / 18th Century French School - Landscape with Waterfall, Figures and Ruins

Descriptio Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 70 × 107 cm; framed: 78 × 108.5 cm. A landscape of expansive, theatrical composition, centered around a waterfall amidst rock formations, figures in the foreground, and ruined architecture in the background, all set under an open sky with striking atmospheric effects. The scene reflects the decorative and pastoral style characteristic of 18th-century French painting, combining idealized nature, human figures, and picturesque architectural elements. The composition is known to have also been painted by Jean Pillement (Lyon, 1728–1808), an artist particularly renowned for his fantasy landscapes and decorative scenes. A wax seal is visible on the reverse, which may be of interest in determining its provenance. Condition: generally good. Lot in international warehouse (outside the EU). For shipments to the European Union, import duties and/or taxes will be applicable and are the responsibility of the buyer.
