1877 Pattern Half Dollar. Judd-1531, Pollock-1699. Rarity-7+. Copper.

Finest Known 1877 Judd-1531 Half Dollar One of Barber's Helmeted Liberty Head Patterns in Copper 1877 Pattern Half Dollar. Judd-1531, Pollock-1699. Rarity-7+. Copper. Reeded Edge. Proof-67+ RB (PCGS). Medallic alignment. Obv: William Barber's Helmeted Liberty Head design. Liberty head faces left with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST above, the date 1877 below, and 13 stars arranged around the border, seven left, six right. Liberty is wearing a crested helmet embossed with an eagle motif, and the word LIBERTY on the visor. Rev: An eagle with spreads wings is perched on a tablet inscribed with the Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. The eagle clutches an olive branch in its right talon and three arrows in its left talon. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is inscribed along the upper border, the denomination HALF DOLLAR along the lower border. An outstanding example, this premium Superb Gem Proof retains considerable mint orange color. Warmly toned in medium brown, as well, with enhancing blushes of iridescent salmon-pink and lilac-blue. Both sides are sharply struck and have very pleasing surfaces. A mere six specimens of this die pairing in copper are confirmed, per the uspatterns.com website. That offered here is the finest known, outranking a second ex Simpson specimen graded slightly lower in PCGS Proof-67 RB, and lacquered. This one is truly outstanding, and we are honored to once again bring it to auction. Provenance: Ex Abner Kreisberg's sale of November 1970, lot 1304; Harry W. Bass, Jr.; our (Bowers and Merena's) sale of the Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection, Part I, May 1999, lot 1233, as PCGS Proof-66 RB; Heritage's Long Beach Signature Auction of February 2001, lot 7482, as PCGS Proof-66 RB; Bob R.
