Premium Gem Full Red Proof 1873 Open 3 Two-Cent Piece 1873 Two-Cent Piece. Open 3. Proof-66 RD (CACG). A breathtakingly beautiful example of this scarce and enigmatic issue. Both sides are dressed in original mint orange color with soft olive undertones and, on the reverse, delicate silvery highlights. Fully defined from the rims to the centers with a smooth, virtually pristine mint finish that combines subtly reflective fields with softly frosted motifs. This is the more elusive of the two date logotypes of the final year Proof-only 1873 two-cent piece, survivors approximately two and a half times rarer than their Close 3 counterparts. Traditional numismatic wisdom has it that the Close 3 examples are originals and the Open 3 specimens restrikes, although there is no documentary evidence to support this theory. The Open 3 is a significant condition rarity above the Proof-65 level of preservation, the premium Gem offered here is of further desirability given the fully original mint color that it retains. It is one of the two finest full Red specimens evaluated by CACG and is sure to see spirited bidding among astute collectors. CACG Population: 2; 0 graded higher in this category. PCGS# 3656. NGC ID: 2754. Click here for certification details from CAC.
