1873 Pattern Liberty Seated Quarter. Judd-1270, Pollock-1412. Rarity-7+.

1873 Pattern Liberty Seated Quarter. Judd-1270, Pollock-1412. Rarity-7+. Copper. Reeded Edge. Proof-65 RD (PCGS). The design is the same that the Mint used to produce regular issue 1873 No Arrows, Close 3 Liberty Seated quarters. These pieces were most likely struck for sale to contemporary collectors as part of complete off-metal Proof sets. It is estimated that about a half dozen examples exist for the 1873 quarter in copper. This is the single finest piece known to PCGS. Rich cherry-red mint color blankets each side, enhanced by iridescent powder blue on the high points. The fields are deeply reflective and even further enhance the tremendous eye appeal of this copper striking. A rare opportunity for the pattern specialist. Provenance: From (probably) RARCOA's sale of the Harry X Boosel "1873" Collection, April 1972 Central States Numismatic Society Convention Sale, lot 681; our (American Numismatic Rarities') Robert Michael Prescott Collection sale, January 2006, lot 896, as PCGS Proof-63 BN; Heritage's sale of the JTR Collection, March 2010 ANA Signature Auction, lot 1954, as NGC Proof-64 RD Cameo; Heritage's Long Beach Signature Auction of May-June 2012, lot 4708; Heritage's Philadelphia Signature Auction of August 2012, lot 4364; our Chicago ANA Auction of August 2013, lot 2926; Heritage's CSNS Signature Auction of April 2014, lot 6105; Heritage's sale of the Dornoch Collection, January 2019 FUN Signature Auction, lot 5476. PCGS Population: just 1 in all grades in the RD category. PCGS# 81555. NGC ID: 2A85. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
