1870 Pattern Dime. Judd-826, Pollock-916. Rarity-6+. Silver. Plain Edge. Proof-66 (NGC). CAC. Obv: William Barber's portrait of Liberty seated to the left with an olive sprig in her left hand, right hand supports a shield with ribbon inscribed LIBERTY in raised letters. A free-standing liberty pole with cap is behind the portrait, the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is around the border, and the date 1870 is below. Rev: The denomination 10 CENTS within a wreath of cotton and corn with the word STANDARD above. Deeply and richly toned, as are so many of the fabulous ex Newman Collection coins, direct lighting reveals the most vivid colors, as well as appreciable reflectivity in the fields. Fewer than half a dozen examples of this Judd number are confirmed, per the uspatterns.com website, and this is one of the absolute finest available to today's discerning numismatists.
