1869 Liberty Seated Half Dollar. JD-2. Rarity-4. Proof-65 Cameo (PCGS). Peripheral toning in pretty golden-orange and powder blue iridescence yields to silvery near-brilliance in the centers. This is a sharply struck Proof, the design elements also set apart from reflective fields by a lightly frosted finish. From a respectable mintage for the era of 650 coins, although the Proof 1869 half dollar is difficult to locate with a Cameo finish. Writing in the 2025 volume in his United States Proof Coins reference series, John W. Dannreuther conjectures: Perhaps, the use of the 1866 and 1867 reverse dies accounts for the lack of frost. Unless refurbished with a dip in acid, dies lost their contrast after repeated strikings. The author further opines that the practice of holding over undated dis for subsequent years of Proof coinage is attributable to Franklin Peale, who replaced John Adam Eckfeldt as chief coiner in 1839. The 1869 JD-2 half dollar offered here was struck from a holdover reverse die first employed in 1867. Provenance: From the Mack C. Chase Collection. PCGS Population: 5; 8 finer in this category (Proof-67 Cameo finest). There are no grading events listed in the PCGS DCAM category. PCGS# 86427. NGC ID: 27U4.
