1868 Pattern Five-Cent Piece. Judd-624, Pollock-693. Rarity-6-. Nickel. Plain Edge. Wide Planchet. Proof-64 (NGC). Obv: Similar to the circulating nickel three-cent pieces of the era, but on a larger scale and with a broad rim surrounding. Rev: A large laurel wreath with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST above in tiny letters, the denomination 5 / CENTS within. The word CENTS is on a curved line, and a broad rim surrounds the entire design. The frosty golden-gray surfaces exhibit frosty motifs set against modestly reflective fields. The uspatterns.com website notes: These were issued in sets along with the one-cent, Judd-605-607 / Pollock-670-672, and three-cents, Judd-615-617 / Pollock-680-683. Examples were struck in the following combinations: Nickel on regular size planchet, Judd-623 / Pollock-692 with probably 40-50 pieces known; Nickel on wide planchet, Judd-624 / Pollock-693 with two or three dozen believed to exist. The present lot is, of course, one of the wide planchet strikes. NGC Census: 5; 3 finer in this category (all Proof-65). The corresponding PCGS Population is 3/9 (Proof-66 finest). PCGS# 60841. NGC ID: 29NF. Click here for certification details from NGC.
