1865 Pattern Nickel Three-Cent Piece. Judd-413, Pollock-484. Rarity-5. Copper. Plain Edge. Proof-64 RB (PCGS). CAC. The obverse and reverse designs are the same that the Mint used to coin regular issue 1865 nickel three-cent pieces. Struck from the considerably rarer of two obverse dies known for this Judd number, with the date placed high in the field and showing no evidence of repunching. Gorgeous antique copper-rose patina with plenty of underlying mint orange color. A few trivial marks on Liberty's cheek prelude a full Gem rating, but this is a sharply struck and visually appealing Proof that will appeal to discerning pattern enthusiasts as well as advanced nickel three-cent collectors. Provenance: From Heritage's New York Signature Auction of November 2013, lot 4521; Legend Rare Coin Auctions' sale of the Steven Cook Collection of Patterns, Part I, May 2018 Regency Auction 26, lot 776. PCGS Population: 5; 2 finer in this category (Proof-65+ RB finest). CAC Stickered Population: 3; 0. PCGS# 70594. NGC ID: 29J2. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
