Exceedingly Rare Copper Julian MI-30 U.S. Colored Troops Medal Only 11 Struck 1864 U.S. Colored Troops Before Richmond Medal. Julian MI-30. Copper, Bronzed. MS-63 BN (NGC). 40.0 mm. A classic rarity in the U.S. Mint's military medal series, and represented here by a handsome piece dressed in dominant mahogany-brown patina. Direct lighting calls forth pale iridescent undertones of golden-apricot and powder blue, as well as semi-reflective tendencies from the fields. Fully struck and otherwise choice, a minor reverse edge bruise just before 3 o'clock is noted. Our last offering of a bronze example, in our Summer 2022 Global Showcase Auction, brought $12,600. An awarded specimen in silver, from our (Stack's) January 2009 Americana Sale, sold for a record $34,500. Were this medal as famous among numismatists as it is among historians, they might have brought considerably more. Provenance: From the Henry Mitchell Collection. Purchased from John Kraljevich, March 2015. Click here for certification details from NGC.
