1857-S Liberty Head Double Eagle. Variety-20D. Bold 7, Faint S. MS-63

1857-S Liberty Head Double Eagle. Variety-20D. Bold 7, Faint S. MS-63 (PCGS). CAC. Gold SS Central America Label. The lovely satin surfaces of this historic double eagle exhibit vivid rose-red peripheral highlights around warmer orange-apricot centers. The strike is universally sharp throughout, and the surfaces are very attractive at the Choice Mint State level. With more than 5,000 examples discovered as part of the treasure of the SS Central America shipwreck, the 1857-S has become one of the most popular No Motto Liberty Head double eagles. The present example illustrates the scarcer 20D variety, enhancing its appeal for advanced collectors. Provenance: Ex SS Central America. Later from our sale of Selections from the Aberg Collection, November 2021 Baltimore Auction, lot 3398. PCGS Population (Variety-20D attribution only): 44; 22 finer (all MS-64). PCGS# 70003. BASE PCGS# 8922. NGC ID: 2696.
