1840-C Liberty Head Half Eagle. Winter-1. AU-50 (NGC). Die State II. Deep honey-olive gold color overall with tinges of light reddish-rose around the centers. Somewhat glossy in texture, and curiously so to betray an old cleaning, with a few obverse scuffs over and before Liberty's portrait also mentioned for accuracy. The 1840-C is a rare and very underrated half eagle that is seldom seen in grades above EF. It is decidedly more rare in all grades than the 1839-C and the 1841-C to which it is typically compared. With a reported mintage of just 18,992 pieces struck, it is also more rare than any of the D-Mint half eagle issues from 1839 to 1841. Provenance: From the Bryan C. Tipton Collection. PCGS# 8196. NGC ID: 25SD. Click here for certification details from NGC.
