1839 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Reeded Edge. HALF DOL. GR-4. Rarity-1. Large Letters. AU-53 (NGC). Deep slate toning is fairly even across the fields, while the devices are a touch lighter, contributing to the circulated cameo appearance that many collectors appreciate. This is a fairly common variety and represents the final use of the obverse die previously employed for GR-1, GR-2, and GR-3. As such, the crack at the base of the date is always present and is more readily visible on GR-4, though it remains fairly light compared with many of the more prominent die cracks encountered elsewhere in the series. On the reverse, a crack below the second A of AMERICA extending into the eagle's left wing is also always present. An additional crack is observed that extends from the feathers below stripe six in the shield to the eagle's right talon. A late die state example, but all features are readily apparent and the coin is attractive. Graham assessed the variety as Rarity-1 in 2012, while Koenings assigned it Rarity-2 in 2024. Jim Koenings Commentary: My Koenings Newsletter #64 (12-15-24) ranked this die marriage R-2 for rarity; it is one of the three most common die marriages for 1839. Only 1839 GR-5 and 1839 GR-7 were rated lower at R-1. Early GR-4 die states are rare, however. Provenance: From the Jim Koenings Collection. PCGS# 6179. NGC ID: 24G6.
