1838 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Reeded Edge. HALF DOL. GR-4. Rarity-1. AU-55 (PCGS). CAC. A handsome coin with antique-silver surfaces brought to life by light golden iridescence and cobalt toning that frames the obverse devices and both peripheries. GR-4 is a common variety and a favorite with type collectors, as it is typically well struck even in advanced die states such as seen here. Die state collectors also appreciate GR-4 for the progression of its reverse cracks, which begin thin and develop through several states before culminating in a fully bisecting crack accompanied by lumps and heavy clashing. Additional points of interest are the rim breaks above TE in STATES and OF in the reverse legend. A premium-quality example, as evidenced by the CAC sticker. Jim Koenings Commentary: This die marriage is rated R-1. Along with 1838 GR-9, GR-11 and GR-13, it is very common and easily found. However, further study is needed concerning rotated dies and rare die states. Provenance: From the Jim Koenings Collection. PCGS# 6177. NGC ID: 24G5. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
