1838 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Reeded Edge. HALF DOL. GR-3. Rarity-2. AU-53 (PCGS). Attractive antique-silver surfaces are a touch glossy, with gold, lilac, rose, and cobalt toning that blends together in a very pleasing way. Despite the advanced die state, the devices remain fairly bold apart from isolated weakness at some of the stars and the ST of STATES on the reverse, areas Graham notes are typically weak for the variety. A thin scratch extends from the rim below star 4 into the field and is noted for accuracy, though the toning hides it remarkably well and it is essentially undetectable without a loupe. Jim Koenings Commentary: This die marriage is rated R-1 (more than 1,000 known). Unlike the 1837 die marriages, which may be found with stretched or weak stars, most 1838 die marriages do not exhibit these characteristics. Further research is still needed concerning rotated reverse dies and extremely rare die stages. Provenance: From the Jim Koenings Collection. Earlier from Heritage's Weekly Internet Auction of May 15-16, 2018, lot 25421. PCGS# 6177. NGC ID: 24G5. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
