1838 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Reeded Edge. HALF DOL. GR-13. Rarity-1. MS-62 (NGC). "The most common of all varieties of 1838," according to Graham, and a popular variety for type purposes as it typically comes well struck and attractive, as here. The slate-gray surfaces are smooth and lustrous, with golden-mauve and cobalt iridescence adding to the visual interest. A reverse crack spanning much of the periphery begins at the L of HALF and extends leftward all the way to the A of AMERICA and is present on all examples. In earlier die states the crack is thin and visually unobtrusive, but when this reverse die is subsequently reused for GR-14, it develops lumps and becomes considerably more prominent. The obverse displays no die cracks whatsoever. A handsome example worthy of consideration by the type collector. Jim Koenings Commentary: My Koenings Newsletter #64 (12-15-24) rated this die marriage R-1. However, a prime die state specimen, if found, would be exceedingly rare. Provenance: From the Jim Koenings Collection. PCGS# 6177. NGC ID: 24G5. Click here for certification details from NGC.
