1837 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Reeded Edge. 50 CENTS. GR-16. Rarity-4. AU-55 (NGC). Antique-silver fields and lighter gray devices are accented by dusky-rose iridescence on this boldly lustrous and attractive AU GR-16 half dollar. Graham notes that the variety is scarce in AU, and at AU-55 this example falls within the Condition Census in both his and Koenings' studies. This is a middle to late die state example, with Graham's diagnostic reverse crack for the late die state only beginning to develop. Graham describes the fully developed crack as running from "Rim thru bottom of F1 - eagle's neck - thru shield..." Here, an extremely faint crack can be seen under magnification, leaving the F of OF and terminating in the adjacent field. Koenings assigned GR-16 a Rarity-4+ rating in December 2024. Jim Koenings Commentary: This die marriage was rated R-4+ (81 to 120 known) on 12-15-24. Only three specimens are known that grade finer than MS-63. Provenance: From the Jim Koenings Collection. PCGS# 6176. NGC ID: 24G4. Click here for certification details from NGC.
