1819 Series Numismatica Medal by Vivier. WASHINGTON. Musante GW-98, Baker-132, Pack V2-A. Bronze. MS-66 BN (NGC). 41.0 mm. The edge is not visible through the NGC holder, and its style is not noted on the insert. This is a richly original, evenly toned example with a smooth, frosty texture that includes modest hints of semi-reflectivity in the fields. A lovely Gem specimen of this early entry into the expansive Series Numismatica, medals that celebrated more than 150 famous persons. As a group, they are generally considered common, but this attractive Washington portrait piece is among the most desired in the entire series. Additionally, this is a considerably rarer die pairing of the issue. A study of auction appearances found 15 offerings of the V1-A die pairing compared with just seven of this variant. It was struck from the same reverse but a different obverse featuring the following identifiers: OBVERSE V2 WASHINGTON -W of WASHINGTON is two V punches, overlapping, but very tightly so -W of WASHINGTON close to hair, but does not touch -Small signature beneath truncation -Stand of I stand points just under nose -No curl point hooks upward under tip of N Provenance: From our Summer 2022 Global Showcase Auction, August, lot 1044.
