1807 Capped Bust Right Half Eagle. BD-5. Rarity-6+. Large Reverse Stars. AU-50 (PCGS). BD Die State c/b. While AU-50 may be a fairly modest grade for pre-1834 U.S. Mint gold coin, which issues did not circulate to the same extent as the lower denominations in silver and copper, when the die variety is considered the present half eagle becomes immediately significant. BD-5 is the scarcest die pairing of the 1807-dated Capped Bust Right issue, with an estimate of just 18 to 22 pieces extant (per John W. Dannreuther, 2006). The variety is easily identified by star 1 on the obverse touching a denticle; this die appears in no other pairing, and it failed quickly in the press run for BD-5. Deep rose-gold patina dominates the in-hand appearance of this piece, although lighter honey-gold is seen in some of the protected areas, where original mint frost is also most intense. There is some softness of strike in the centers, not uncommon for the type, but overall detail remains bold in the presence of light wear. Wispy hairlines and a few other light marks are noted, none of which are inconsistent with the assigned grade. PCGS# 8092. NGC ID: CKLF. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
