1800 Draped Bust Half Dime. LM-1. Rarity-3. Fine-12 (PCGS). CAC. Popular for type purposes, LM-1 is the most readily obtainable die pairing of the 1800-dated Draped Bust half dime issue. The kind of quality displayed by this CAC-approved example, however, is another matter entirely. These workhorse early U.S. Mint silver coins were heavily circulated, for many years, during which time most survivors became heavily worn, if not also impaired. Numismatic mishandling took a further toll in later decades, with the result that a handsome and problem-free Fine grade example such as this is a scarce find in today's market. Charcoal gray fields support pewter gray motifs, the interplay between the two providing a nice circulated cameo appearance. The strike is soft around the end of Liberty's bust and in the opposite area at upper right reverse - common for the type, and easily overlooked here relative to the assigned grade. Most major features are bold, in fact, and the overall design is fully appreciable. A nice piece that is sure to attract strong bids. Provenance: From the Bryan C. Tipton Collection. PCGS# 4264. NGC ID: 2326. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
