"1796" (post-World War I) Castorland Medal, or Jeton. Paris Mint Restrike. W-9160. Gold. Plain Edge with (cornucopia) 3OR. MS-64 (PCGS). A gorgeous piece, as perhaps expected given the manner of production, distribution, and the assigned grade. Both sides are frosty to semi-reflective in finish and deliver wonderfully original color in bright yellow gold. Fully struck and a nicely preserved, a Gem were it not for a few faint hairlines from numismatic handling that are not in any way distracting. This is a highly elusive, if relatively modern, production struck at the Paris Mint from copy obverse and reverse dies. Garrett owned a specimen in gold from the original obverse and copy reverse that he acquired in 1883; Norweb's was from the same dies. Regardless of striking period, these gold restrikes of the Castorland medal appear very rarely under normal market conditions and are avidly bid on when presented. Provenance: From the Emerald Coast Collection. PCGS# 535046. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
