1794 Liberty Cap Cent. NC-11, B-17. Rarity-7. Head of 1794, Severed Locks. VG Details--Rim Damage (PCGS). This rare variety was first identified by James H. Young in 1995, with a second example attributed by James Young, Jr. (no relation) in 1997. Six more have been discovered since, including that offered here, which was recently discovered in a small lot of coins purchased via eBay. All eight examples of the 1794 NC-11 are in low grades and have significant impairments. This one is the CC#4 coin, and it features pleasing olive and autumn-orange brown patina that provides an attractively original appearance. There are planchet voids on the obverse below the letter B in LIBERTY and on the reverse at the left ribbon end, as made; several shallow rim bruises on both sides explain the PCGS qualifier, the most prominent of which is at 4 o'clock on the reverse. The remaining marks that pepper the surfaces are singularly inconspicuous in most viewing situations. Peripheral detail is soft at upper right obverse and lower right reverse, but most features throughout both sides are bold, date complete, Liberty's portrait fairly sharp for the grade. With so few of these to choose from, and the in-hand appearance quite pleasing when all things are considered, this 1794 NC-11 will have no difficulty finding its way into a specialized early copper collection.
