"1789" Mott Token. Rulau-E NY 611, Breen-1021. Thin Planchet. Plain Edge. EF-45 (PCGS). Early, unbroken die state. An ideal type coin for its smooth, richly toned surfaces and its crisp early die state. Both sides are satiny chocolate brown, smooth and appealing, though we note a bit of microscopic planchet roughness on the obverse, reverse with some old dirt built up around the eagle and some of the peripheral letters. Not quite ideally centered but pretty close; the reverse is rotated 90 degrees clockwise from coin alignment. A handsome piece. The art naif beauty of the Mott token has made it beloved, even as the 1789 date placed upon them has created fans from collectors who would otherwise eschew it - and driven it from the context within which it properly belongs. It's mostly likely this token is a production of the 1820s or 1830s, a classic one with an incomparably American design. Though appreciated as a type, the rarity of its varieties has often gone unappreciated. Provenance: From the Emerald Coast Collection. PCGS# 604. NGC ID: 2B5L.
