1788 New Jersey Copper. Maris 65-u, W-5495. Rarity-3. Head Right. EF-40 (PCGS). 145.1 grains. SHI DS2. Dominant olive-copper patina with intermingled medium brown, central obverse with variegated reddish-rose and charcoal colors associated with light surface scale/carbon build up. Centering is good enough to allow complete definition for all major design elements, although the border denticulation at left obverse is thin, that at left reverse beyond the flan. Planchet lightly flawed along left border, shallow curved clip at 1 o'clock is free of the peripheral letters. This piece is boldly struck overall, surfaces with original planchet pitting scattered about, mostly in and around the centers, obverse with a few faint pin scratches in the left field that are the only individually mentionable marks. The in-hand appearance is generally smooth, nonetheless, texture appearing hard and frosty. The SHI Census for this Maris number lists seven coins, topped by an unverified AU, a pair of EF coins (the Maris-Garrett coin and the Frontenac Ford triplicate), and four VF+ coins, including one listed as "Newman; B.G. Johnson; Brand." As noted by the Heritage cataloger in their May 2014 Newman IV sale, "This may be the Brand-Johnson-Newman piece..." Regardless, it is one of the nicest examples of Maris 65-u obtainable, and is eagerly awaiting inclusion in another advanced New Jersey cabinet. This lot includes NGC insert #2041021-006 with a grade of EF-45 BN and Eric P. Newman Collection provenance from an earlier certification of this coin. Provenance: From the John Bolger Collection. Earlier ex Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society; Heritage's sale of the Eric P. Newman Collection, Part IV, May 2014, lot 30225. Possibly also ex Virgil Brand; Burdette G. Johnson. PCGS# 521. NGC ID: 2B4Y. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
