1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 48-g, W-5275. Rarity-1. No Sprig Above Plow, Batman Shield. VF-30 (PCGS). 143.8 grains. Attractive olive-copper and walnut brown patina to both sides, the surfaces are lightly granular overall, but the only sizeable or otherwise individually mentionable blemish is a minor flan flaw at the reverse border immediately before the letter M in UNUM. Well defined for the grade in all areas save for at the lower obverse border, where the date is a bit soft and approaches the edge of the planchet due to imperfect centering. Reverse rotated a few degrees counterclockwise from coin alignment. A nice-looking example of this Maris number with the distinct Batman-type shield on the reverse. Provenance: From the John Bolger Collection. Earlier from our (Bowers and Merena's) Four Memorable Collections sale, September 1985, lot 1819. PCGS# 688361. BASE PCGS# 503. NGC ID: AUL8.
