1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 38-Y, W-5170. Rarity-3. No Sprig Above Plow, Pony Head. VF-20 (PCGS). 146.1 grains. SHI DS3. Nice medium brown with tinges of olive, mostly smooth and highly appealing. A few splashes of deeper chestnut color are noted around the plow, area of discoloration at central reverse as well. A tiny mint clip is seen under the date. Equally tiny edge nick under left end of the exergual line on obverse, a few minor striations at right side of obverse, thin pin scratch through shield blends in on the reverse, other tiny scattered marks or striations commensurate with grade and leave the coin with very positive overall visual appeal. Ideally centered and exhibiting a bold date. While this is not a rare variety, many of the marquee New Jersey collections have done no better than a VF example, as here. Provenance: From the Emerald Coast Collection. Earlier ex Richard August, May 1970; Alan Kessler; Pine Tree's sale of the William Weimer Collection (1976 EAC), March 1976, lot 2056; our (Stack's) sale of the George Polis Collection, January 2007 Americana Sale, lot 6605. PCGS# 506. NGC ID: AUL8. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
