1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 34-J, W-5115. Rarity-3. Sprig Above Plow, Deer Head. Overstruck on a 1788 Connecticut Copper, Miller 9-E. Very Fine, Edge Chipping. 132.10 grains. SHI DS2. A distinct and eagerly sought Maris number, made even more desirable here by the readily identifiable undertype. This is a particularly desirable attribute for the variety for, as the authors of the SHI reference New Jersey State Coppers observe: The 34-J is found struck on a variety of host coins. As mentioned in the Collecting Methodologies section, a collector including the "Deer Head" in a type set might seek out an example with an identifiable undertype. The Connecticut copper host coin is more readily identifiable on the reverse, where much of the effigy is seen within and around the New Jersey shield, some letters in AUCTORI CONNEC also discernible at the periphery. The undertype is less evident on obverse, but some portions of the central motif can be discerned, especially the outline of the shield in the field behind the horse's head, as well as one of the digits 8 in the date at the upper border. The New Jersey copper design is fairly bold despite some softness due to the overstrike, as well as moderate, yet even wear. Dark brown and charcoal-copper surfaces are microgranular with light, scattered pitting, minor chipping around the edge, but this piece presents quite nicely during in-hand viewing. It is sure to see spirited bidding among specialists. PCGS# 763331. BASE PCGS# 147876. NGC ID: AUL7.
