1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 32-T, W-5100. Rarity-2. No Sprig Above Plow, Wide Ears Below Gap. AU-55 (PCGS). 131.9 grains. SHI DS1. This is a great-looking New Jersey copper irrespective of Maris number. The surfaces appear hard and tight during in-hand appreciation, close inspection with a loupe revealing only a hint of microgranularity and tiny planchet fissures that are a bit more prevalent on the obverse. Centering is quite good, just a bit off to upper left obverse and lower left reverse, in which areas the border denticulation is beyond the flan. Both sides are sharply defined overall with appreciable faded mint color to otherwise medium brown surfaces. A tiny, dull scrape in the obverse field behind the horse head is mentioned only for lack of any other marks to point out. Certainly a choice example, and one that will see spirited bidding from discerning specialists. Provenance: From the John Bolger Collection. Purchased from Anthony Terranova, April 17, 2008. PCGS# 506. NGC ID: AUL8. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
