1787 Connecticut Copper. Miller 33.36-T.3, W-3905. Rarity-8. Draped

1787 Connecticut Copper. Miller 33.36-T.3, W-3905. Rarity-8. Draped Bust Left. Double Struck. Fine Details--Environmental Damage (PCGS). A highly significant offering for advanced Connecticut copper enthusiasts, this is only the third example of the 1787 Miller 33.36-T.3 variety that has come to our attention. Obviously an extremely rare variety, this die pairing was discovered by Ted Craige in 1965. The discovery piece, now certified EF-40 by PCGS, was Syd Martin's primary coin, purchased in the 2020 Partrick sale, and realizing $14,400 in our November 2023 sale of Syd's collection. The second example is also ex Syd Martin, acquired from Christopher B. Young in April 2017, and selling for $2,880 in our August 2024 Global Showcase Auction as PCGS Good Details--Environmental Damage. The present example, and newcomer to the census, is also rough and granular overall, but less so than the second-line Syd Martin coin, with the result that the gray-brown and chestnut surfaces present as relatively smooth during in-hand viewing. Double struck, as noted on the PCGS insert, and most noticeably so at upper left obverse, lower left reverse and in the centers on both sides, where doubling affects the effigy's profile, bust, and several of the peripheral letters. Impression a bit tight to lower obverse and upper reverse, centers soft, but overall design readily appreciable with most peripheral features bold, including all four digits in the date. Diagnostics for the Miller 33.36-T.3 dies are clear, including the reverse die break along the tops of the peripheral devices at left. PCGS# 917728. BASE PCGS# 370. NGC ID: 2B2X.
