Premium Choice AU Newman 104-FF "New Haven Restrike" in Silver From a Mintage of Just 100 Coins, ca. 1860 "1787" (ca. 1860) Fugio Cent. "New Haven Restrike," Horatio Rust Strike. Newman 104-FF, W-17570. Rarity-5. Silver. AU-58 (PCGS). This is a Horatio Rust issue, circa 1860, with a mintage in silver of 100 pieces struck from these well-known fabrication dies. While PCGS has certified a small number of Mint State examples (including the stunning MS-63+ that brought $16,800 in our November 2025 Showcase Auction), this premium Choice AU coin is among the nicest for the type that we have ever had the privilege of bringing to auction. Temptingly close to full Mint State preservation, both sides are sharply struck, near-fully defined, and also retain virtually complete luster. The softly frosted surfaces, in fact, show just a trace of friction on the obverse that confirms the AU-58 assessment from PCGS. Warmly toned in dominant pewter gray, blushes of soft powder blue and pinkish-gold iridescence flash into view as the surfaces rotate into direct lighting; the colors are most vivid at the peripheries. The finely granular texture is as made, the reverse with several more prominent die rust lumps within the rings at left that are also characteristic of the type. There are no troublesome handling marks or other post-production blemishes to report, and the eye appeal is outstanding. A highly collectible example for discerning type purposes, and a coin that will also fit comfortably into many specialized collections. Provenance: From the Emerald Coast Collection. PCGS Population: 6; 19 finer (MS-63+ finest). PCGS# 915. NGC ID: 2B8U. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
