Important 1786 Maris 21-N New Jersey The Newman Coin 1786 New Jersey Copper. Maris 21-N, W-4910. Rarity-3. Curved Plow Beam, Mane Punch Before Ears, Wide Shield. MS-62 BN (NGC). An important example of this Maris variety, included in the Siboni-Howes-Ish Condition Census as sixth finest known from this die marriage. Both sides are extremely sharp and ideally centered, with a full complement of denticles framing both sides. The eye appeal is excellent, and no damaging marks are seen. The obverse is a fairly even deep mahogany, somewhat matte in appearance and showing some shallow surface striations at the letters OV in NOVA, SA in CÆSAREA, and on the horse head. The reverse is smooth and lustrous with excellent gloss, all an ideal shade of light brown. The Maris 21-N pairing produced several coins that survived into the 21st century in very nice condition. The best of these is unquestionably the Syd Martin coin, a PCGS MS-65+ RB specimen that brought $72,000 in our sale of August 2022. We haven't sold another certified Mint State example, though we've had several in the EF-AU range in the last two decades. This example surpasses them, and it represents an impressive opportunity for New Jersey specialists or any collectors whose fondness for early American coins inspires the search for a single well pedigreed type coin. Provenance: From the Winslet Collection. Earlier ex Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society; Heritage's sale of the Eric P. Newman Collection, Part IV, May 2014, lot 30187. PCGS# 498. NGC ID: 2B4H. Click here for certification details from NGC.
