1786 New Jersey Copper. Maris 18-M, W-4890. Rarity-2. Curved Plow Beam, Bridle, Wide Shield. Reverse Double Struck. VF-20 (PCGS). 138.8 grains. SHI DS3. A perennially popular Guide Book variety in the New Jersey series, and represented here by a respectable mid-grade example. The strike is well centered, border denticulation complete, if a bit uneven on the obverse. That side of the coin retains universally bold detail despite the presence of moderate wear. The reverse is softer, especially within the shield, peripheral features a bit distorted due to a pronounced double strike. Microgranular overall, although numerous fine scratches on the horse, plow and shield are more significant as detractions. Color is a richly original blend of deep golden-brown, steely-copper and chestnut, the reverse the somewhat more vivid of the two sides. Provenance: From the John Bolger Collection. Purchased from Robert Rhue, August 2002. PCGS# 501. NGC ID: 2B4J. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
