1785 Vermont Copper. Landscape. RR-2, Bressett 1-A, W-2005. Rarity-3. VERMONTS. VF-25 (PCGS). An old friend on our firm, cataloged in our (Stack's) April 1988 sale of the magnificent F. Dabney Caldwell, Jr. Collection as: A nice planchet, chocolate brown with a couple of faint planchet striations. Excellent centering. To this we add that the design appears somewhat cramped on the obverse, border into the tops of many peripheral letters, same with the letters in QUARTA on the reverse, but all design elements are fully appreciable, and the focal features in the centers are impressively bold. The plow is full for this early die state example that shows no trace of the break from the lower border at the digit 8 that eventually develops into an internal cud break. Microgranular overall, obverse field with a few faint pin scratches above the plow and mountain range, color a strong suit in warm, even saddle brown. Landscape Vermonts are among the most challenging early American coppers to find choice, and this mid grade RR-2 will has much to offer astute bidders. Provenance: From the Emerald Coast Collection. Earlier from our (Stack's) sale of the F. Dabney Caldwell, Jr. Collection, April 1988, lot 2010. PCGS# 539. NGC ID: 2B55. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
