1778 Machin's Mills Halfpenny. Vlack 11-78A, W-7820. Rarity-3. GEORGIVS III, Group III. AU-50 (PCGS). 97.0 grains. Nice certified AU quality for this more obtainable Vlack number in the Machin's Mills series, one that nevertheless is infrequently encountered above EF and/or without significant problems. Here we note minimally granular, generally smooth-looking surfaces that present as hard and tight in most viewing situations. Olive-gray patina on otherwise deep brown surfaces, a little bit of dark surface scale lines the upper reverse border, but to no detriment, especially given the lack of troublesome marks. Boldly defined despite the presence of some original planchet texture in the centers, a couple of shallow planchet fissures at left obverse are also as made, and just as easy to overlook.
