1760 Voce Populi Halfpenny. Nelson-8, Zelinka 3-C, W-13820. Rarity-6+.

1760 Voce Populi Halfpenny. Nelson-8, Zelinka 3-C, W-13820. Rarity-6+. No P, Long Nose. EF-45 (PCGS). This is the rare Nelson-8 Voce Populi, distinguished from Nelson-15 (with which it shares an obverse die) by the use of a Roman numeral I in the date. On Nelson-15, a letter J is used for the 1 in the date. Despite its scarcity, we have handled a few Mint State and AU examples of Nelson-8 in recent decades. With smooth, glossy, medium walnut brown surfaces, this premium Choice EF is far more desirable than the granular AU-55 Ted Craige coin offered as lot 6228 in our November 2012 Baltimore Auction. The upper reverse border lightly engages the tops of most letters in HIBERNIA and the top of the seated figure's head, obverse better centered, both sides boldly defined overall despite the presence of light wear. There are neither detracting flan flaws nor troublesome post-production marks, the surfaces wholesome, the eye appeal strong. The winning bidder of this lot will either establish or confirm themselves as an advanced and discerning specialist in the Voce Populi halfpenny varieties. Provenance: From the Emerald Coast Collection. PCGS# 262. NGC ID: 2AUC. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
