1760 Voce Populi Halfpenny. Nelson-6, Zelinka 5-D, W-13820. Rarity-5. No P, Square Head. EF-40 (PCGS). CAC. 109.4 grains. Nice warm chestnut brown with exceptional natural gloss. Very little actual wear, abundant die finish lines and die texture visible in the fields. A few scattered natural planchet pits are seen in the soft central obverse and reverse. Well centered, denticles visible on obverse from 9 o'clock to 6 o'clock, similar on the reverse. An unusually sharp example of this very scarce variety, one that ranks among the finest recorded. Clearly finer than the Ryder-Boyd-Ford and McGrath coins, perhaps similar to the Zelinka example or the Norweb piece if those examples had as much natural gloss. This variety was rated as Rarity-5 in the McGrath/2007 C-4 Convention Sale, which seems about right; it is definitely one of the more challenging varieties to find and essentially impossible to find better. Apart from the Ted Craige-Emerald Cast specimen featured here, in fact, our recent offerings for this Nelson number have all been in grades of VF or lower, a few with problems. Provenance: From the Emerald Coast Collection. Earlier from our sale of the Ted L. Craige Collection, November 2012 Baltimore Auction, lot 6223. PCGS# 262. NGC ID: 2AUC.
